This project was done at an elderly home with the company Attendo Care as collaborative partner. Attendo with Geir Hansen was a brilliant, innovative and advanced collaborator who provided the conditions for innovation to happen

It suggested a design for better organization of the working day of the employees. By looking at the situation of the employees and not as a user centered project normally would do at the clients it achieves a very good cost benefit factor.

The suggestion is very cheap and easy implemented and the potential effects substantial.

The system in its prototype stage is currently tested at the paulus elderly home in Oslo.

The project hasgenerated great attention and it will be interesting to follow its further development.

The project is a good case for SOD, Very Rapid Learning Processes and the development of addaptive expertice in co-operation with experts.

The aim of this project is to create a better day for both residents and employees in elderly homes. It is proven that input and stimulus can help people suffering from dementia reduce their use of medicine, avert uneasiness as well as preventing illness. 

Our response reorganises daily tasks into distinct areas of responsibility. The goal is to give residents a richer last home, and the employees a possibility to plan their day better. Our project is a result of workshops, observation and co-creation with employees at Paulus elderly home in Oslo.

This student project was done by Martin Skogholt Hansen and Mikael Johansen, graduate students at AHO (the Oslo school of Architecture and Design) in collaboration with the Ulstein Group ship builder of western Norway and the Ulstein Bridge Concept research project currently running at AHO. The main goal for this project was to explore the possibilities for change on the exterior of Ulstein’s ship-bridges.
Changes were done to make maintenance on the roof more safe and efficient and a new design language for the bridge was explored to make Ulstein stick out among the competition in the maritime industry. During the project new possibilities were found by introducing an asymmetrical bridge design. Making the bridge in fixed separated parts connected with a modular structure, the new bridge proposal can adopt to a wide variety of vessel sizes while reducing weight. Parts of the bridge can be standardized and produced more efficiently and this solution also opens up for a more specific and coherent interior design in the future.

Complexity and Other Beasts

Complexity and other Beasts is a project by graduate student Elisabeth Skjelten who co-operated with The Performance Group in Oslo, a leadership development consultancy. Some of the consultants at TPG have been using GIGAmapping for a while and there is a long term development relationship between TPG and the research at AHO in Systems Oriented Design. The challenge of the project was to make SOD and especially GIGAmapping accessible for more of the consultants at TPG.

The result was a small book that is a quick manual for dealing with complexity in general and for GIGA-mapping especially.

Introduction:

"This is a book for those who want to learn more about how to plan and facilitate mapping workshops. The book came about as a collaboration between myself (a Systems Oriented design and Service design master student) and The Performance Group (a management consulting company). Mapping and visualisation are in my mind the best ways to tackle complexity and other beasts. I have learned to use these tools from the world of design, but these tools can be just as useful in the world of business.

How to deal with complexity and other beasts is not a manual you can follow from A-Z, simply because there is no one recipe that fits all situations. But here is my collection of hopefully helpful tips and tricks meant to inspire and build confidence for mapping workshop newbies."

This booklet was evaluated by the jury as exceptionally well done and with very useful and easy to understand content. The project also won a price at the end of the year show AHO WORKS.  Elisabeth Skjelten intends to publish the booklet and we are currently investigating the possibilities so more content has to wait.

Design for dignity in a sexual violence response system

This project was done in collaboration with the Sexual Assault Centre (SAC) at the Legevakten emergency hospital in Oslo. Starting this new collaboration with a field and people who have not previously considered the expanded role of design was not an easy task. It was like opening a new field for design and together with the staff from SAC investigate how design can contribute in this case. The project addresses many aspects of SAC, spanning from information to products and interior as well as processes.

Through a user centred and systems oriented approach The student delivered a project that shows how Nordic Choice Hotels can use universal design for innovation and creativity. The student had to explore many new and unknown areas such as hotel industry, legislation and public web design to name a few.

Throughout the process, the student has been in contact with users, experts, supervisors and people from Nordic Choice Hotels that have provided valuable expertise and insight. Through workshops, meetings and discussions it has been the users that have lead the way to the problems and solutions. The project started of with a broad possition that resulted in a large amount of research in various fields. Using GIGA‐mapping Imade it possible to manage the complex research and keep relevant information visible and accessible for the people involved in the project. This has made it possible to communicate the project in a detailed and efficient way at different stages in the process.

Everybody's Choice is a concept that will make travel planning easier and provide better and richer hotel experience to all users. The concept is an answer to how Nordic Choice Hotels, with simple measures, can provide all guests a more positive and inclusive hotel experience, and make the most out of the current situation in relation to Universal Design.

Everybody's Choice deals with the booking process and parts of the website of Nordic Choice Hotels. It shows how all users can get a better hotel experience through user friendly design, new features such as customizable guest rooms and additional services, and more detailed and accessible information.

The rooms are customizable for the needs of wheel chair users and others with special needs. But customizing the guest room is something everyone can benefit from. By letting the user adjust the lighting, room temperature and remove or add furniture in the room prior to arrival will result in a more personal and inclusive hotel experience.

Additional services such as car rental, guided tours, personal trianers or assistants for disabled people or for business people couild make travelling much easier for guests. For example; a family will be able to book a baby sitter. Or a disabled person could travel to the hotel independently from personal assistants since the hotel would provide all needed help. What services each hotel provides is dependent on the companies the hotels choose to cooperate with.

The project resulted in a hyper customizable service where individual preferences and needs are met by the system. One scenario was a wheel chair user or a blind person who now could travel to the hotel without bringing along personal helpers.

This individualized service provides for the first time radical independence and freedom to all users, spanning from business people, families to all types of special needs.

The economy of the system is cared for by a pay by need bases and by alliances with organizations that do have objective interrests in the system.

The custimization spans from room layout and equipment to personal services provided by associated providers on an individual bases.
